1 Powerful Way the New Brain Science Makes Us Happier

Share

I learned about the new brain science from Dr. Mark Waldman’s seminar on “Spirituality and the Brain” and his book Neurowisdom. Profoundly, he also supplied simple hacks to use our learning. I’ll start with the first hack here.

I’m going to break it down into my version of usable language, so I won’t explain words like “dendrites.” You can consult his book or AI to glean more depth. However, you’ll note that you don’t want shrunken dendrites. And there’s a simple remedy to avoid it.

The biggest enemy to achieving your goals, psychic or otherwise, takes us to 6 Ways the New Brain Science Makes You Happier. To Keep it simple, let’s start with the first.

As with all things, the trick is to do them. However, the upside is that these hacks are quick and easy.

The Number One Enemy to Achieving Your Goals: Stress

Negative thoughts rattle the neurons in your prefrontal lobes. This causes your dendrites to shrink. Shrunken dendrites diminish your ability to make good decisions.

What You Can Do: Frequent relaxation breaks–a few yawns and slow stretches a few times an hour will fluff those dendrites right back up.

Extra Credit:  Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on your current goal.

Simple, right? Without this reminder, I wouldn’t do it and I suspect neither would you. You get caught up in time, stress, distractions and desire. Desire to succeed doesn’t often say “take more breaks.”

Babies, in utero, yawn. It’s an early and necessary reflex. If you can’t stop yawning after you start, then you’ve probably been holding onto a lot of stress.

Take a moment for mindfulness. Observe your body, your breathing, relax. As I was typing the sentence about yawning, I was tightening my lips.

Workaholics beware. Fun and play, relaxation and stretching are the new go-tos. Less pain, more gain.

In the spirit of ease, I’m going to save the next tip for the next newsletter. It’s perfect for you if you ever feel lazy, cranky, judgmental, if you procrastinate or feel lonely or insecure. It’s so simple, I can’t imagine why I haven’t done it yet.

It makes vision boards obsolete.
